Event Date: 16/03/2019
Location: The Vaults, CHQ building, Custom House Quay, Dublin 1 (15:00 - 16:30)

With a panel of Angela Byrne, Marie-Louise Coolahan, Lar Joye, David Murphy, chaired by Tommy Graham, editor of History Ireland.

Saturday 16 March 2019, 15:00–16:30 in the vaults, CHQ building, Custom House Quay, Dublin 1.

In 1986, the prominent maritime historian John de Courcy Ireland wrote: ‘the lives of island peoples like Ireland’s [have] been dominated by the seas encircling them. Yet this fact has been largely ignored by Irish historians.’ This History IrelandHedge School asks why, three decades later, Ireland’s maritime history and heritage continues to be under-valued. Panellists will reflect on the potential of a better appreciation of Irish maritime history and heritage, to help improve understanding of Ireland’s relationships with the wider world over past centuries and into the future.
